There’s often talk about what foods to eat and avoid for better health.
But when looking at protein, fats and carbs is where it can get even more confusing…
For example, one “expert” might say that low carb diets are important, another says low fats are important, another saying you need protein.
It’s so hard to know what’s right isn’t it?!
The fact is I, quite boringly, believe that somewhere in the middle of all of those is best for most people.
You do need protein, most people do need some carbs, and you definitely need fats.
Protein can help the body to repair and stabilise energy levels through the day (amongst other things).
It’s one reason why we offer the “Advanced Vegan Protein” powder as many people don’t manage to get enough protein in their diets each day.
Carbohydrates (from things like rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes) are also normally important.
They are a source of energy (though not the only source of energy by any means).
Most people certainly do better, energy wise, when there are some carbs in their diet. Very low carb diets such as the ketogenic diet are gaining popularity though in my opinion aren’t the best option for the majority of people.
Finally, fats are a very important part of your diet.
Of course, poor quality fats are linked with illnesses and disease and poor health.
But that doesn’t mean that all fats should be classed the same.
Fats are critical for hormone production…
If we want more energy, more sex drive, better skin, better performance and feel better in ourselves then hormones are essential for that.
A low-fat diet (or having the wrong fats in our diet) will mean we suffer from hormonal problems.
One particularly important type of fat is omega 3.
Oily fish (such as salmon, mackerel and sardines) is a particularly good source of omega 3 but to get the recommended daily dosage from fish alone isn’t always convenient, easy or suit personal preferences.
Unfortunately, many people have far too little omega 3 in the diet, and much more of the omega 6 type of fats (which can increase inflammation within your body, leading to joint problems, bowel problems and skin problems, amongst many other things).
Most health experts recommend that everyone supplements with fish oil on an ongoing basis, but unfortunately, many companies have released very poor quality supplements that are filled with toxins and don’t provide you with sufficient levels of the Omega 3 fats that you require.
I’m obviously biased but I actually think “Advanced Fish Oil” is the best quality fish oil on the market.
It’s extremely pure, high strength, sourced from wild fish, and comes in oil or capsule form.
