If you use medication to treat fevers, you might be hurting your immune system.
Scientists from the Medical Research Institute in New Zealand have discovered that having a mild fever is actually good for your body…
And is one way your body strengthens its immune system naturally.
See, your body temperature changes naturally several times a day.
And it happens because your activities are changing, so your body is trying to keep up.
For example, your temperature is lower in the morning and increases in the afternoon.
It also goes up during and after exercise, and after you just ate.
But when you experience fever symptoms it means that your body is fighting off infection.
This infection is caused by bad bacteria.
But this bacteria can’t survive in the low iron environment in your bloodstream.
And when your temperature rises, your body can’t produce iron.
So the infection-causing bacteria have trouble surviving and reproducing.
But what most people do is run to the medicine cabinet the moment they show signs of a fever...
And instead of helping their bodies to fight off the intruder, they actually allow it to thrive and live inside their bodies longer.
If you do this, you may end up dealing with the sickness longer.
And medication only brings your body temperature down…
It does nothing to kill infectious bacteria.
That’s why more and more doctors opt for an alternative way of treating fever.
They call this approach “let it ride.”
Many health experts suggest you stay at home and sleep off the fever, letting your body naturally fight off the infection.
And as much as you may feel unwell doing this — your body might thank you for it later.
However, this doesn’t mean that every fever should be treated this way.
While most fevers are not dangerous and will go away, you should seek immediate medical attention if:
You have a very high fever (above 105 degrees).
The fever is persistent (lasts longer than 48 to 72 hours).
You have other serious symptoms such as shortness of breath, abdominal pain, a headache that doesn’t go away with over-the-counter pain medication, neck stiffness, redness or swelling in joints or extremities, coughing up blood, bloody diarrhoea, recent unexplained weight loss, or unusual fatigue that doesn’t go away.
You have a known serious illness or are immunosuppressed. *
And there’s one more thing to keep in mind… while your body is doing the hard work of fighting off the infection it can lead to dehydration.
So it’s important to drink lots of liquid.
